Halloween 2013: She Meows

“I don't believe in fashion. I believe in costume. Life is too short to be same person every day.”
-Stephanie Perkins, Lola and the Boy Next Door

In my entire life I have been trick-or-treating twice. In New Zealand Halloween's not the most celebrated day of
the year. While on route to my friends dress up 18th birthday last Saturday, Tara and I decided to take a few
impulsive outfit photos on her iphone. When putting together my costume, I decided to put a fashionable twist
on a cat by using my Asos jumpsuit to start the look from. The leather jacket and gloves paired with my slinky
one piece created the base and for some added fun, I topped it off with a pair of ears and a fluffy tail.

Though it was put together with bits and pieces from around the house, I thought it was an pretty okay
costume, a lot better than the people that didn't even attempt to dress up (#slackers).

We would love to hear your Halloween plans from other parts of the world, leave a comment below!

P.S Thanks Tara for the quick doodle you did while watching the block! WOO ALICE AND CALEB, congrats! (Our cousins were
the winners of the NZ version of the show tonight! Proud of you guys!)

Monochrome,,, again!

“Women think of all colors except the absence of color. I have said that black has it all. White too.
Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.”
― Coco Chanel

This jacket is another addition to the wardrobe that the other sister has fallen in love with when it arrived. Last
time it was the army jacket, now this waterfall paneled pleather jacket. Except the roles have swapped this time.
I was in love with this jacket and insisted on ordering it, but the package arrived while I was at work and my first
look at it was on Ellen as she headed out the door to a birthday party haha! The next day I had to reassert my
territory and wear it to work, which was how this outfit came to life.

I've been doing a bit of a spring cleaning/organisation of my room at the moment to get my study space all ready
for exam prep. I'm hoping that this way I'll have a proper study space and it will help keep me motivated and on track
this exam period. But we shall have to see with time how this successful that plan is. It has also included some
accessories organisation and I re-found this necklace and it's gunmetal wolfiness has been my go to accessory
 for the past few days.

For all of you starting/doing exams at the moment I wish you luck, festive goodness will be awaiting us on the
 other side!

The battle of the leggings

"I like being a woman, even in a man’s world. After all, men can’t wear dresses, but we can wear the pants."
- Whitney Houston
Blair Waldorf would be shaking her head in shame if she saw this outfit. One of her famous lines from Gossip Girl was "leggings are not pants" and I am afraid I have broken this golden rule of hers. Im always trying to push the boundaries of how I can style my leggings, and yes, in most cases I agree with Blair that they should not be worn as pants. For the right black leggings however, I can make an exception. With my new striped peplum top, I felt my black leather panelled leggings had just enough 'pant' in them to pull of this look.  Hopefully I wasn't one off those girls you cringe at when you see them walking down the street in leggings haha!

I actually didn't own a peplum top till now, suprising considering the amount of clothes in my closet ;)
But I particularly love the way this one falls low at the back and high at the front!
Have you had any favourite new additions to your wardrobe lately?

What I wore: Warehouse Summer Collection 13/14 Preview

“Never use the word “cheap”. Today everybody can look chic in inexpensive clothes (the rich buy them too). There is good clothing design on every level today. You can be the chicest thing in the world in a T-shirt and jeans — it’s up to you.”
― Karl Lagerfeld

So on Tuesday I was lucky enough to go to a preview for The Warehouse's summer collections along with some other nzgirl bloggers! This is pretty much the first fashion event that I've been to so I was simultaneously excitedand super anxious about the whole affair. It turned out to be a cool time looking at the latest clothing/accessories with some yum nibbles. I even spotted some editors/fashion editors of various NZ magazines! The Warehouse, though not a store synonymous with fashion to everyone, is actually where I have found some pretty key pieces in my current wardrobe (i.e. the shirt and boots in this outfit). So I thought it would be cool to share what I wore and some snaps I took from the event

I spotted quite a few things I was pretty excited about at the preview, and I will be doing a post over on nzgirl about
my favourite Garage item. But this pretty bikini, moustache tote, and bracelets really caught my eye! A summer
shopping marathon will be needed soon I think!

Then there was the food; old fashioned lemonade in a cah-ute dispenser, gorgeous salads (Beef + Rocket was
what I chose, super yum!) and a fruit cup (which I ate before the beef since I'm a back-to-front eater). I love food,
so these beautifully presented fresh treats really made me happy!

This week I dabbled in some simple nail art that I saw in both a Lilly Pebbles/ViviannaDoesMakeup video and a post by Meagan Kerr on nzgirl. It actually turned out pretty good, so I'll definitely try this again in other colours (and hopefully get better at doing them it on my left (writing) hand!)

I was pretty happy with what I wore to the preview, even though a lot of the attendees were rocking the skinny jean, heels, cute top combo. Ellen took these beautiful photos of it when I eventually got home post afternoon-uni- lecture. I did feel a little too "fashion" at uni with such full on makeup and clothing choices! One of our lovely followers tweeted to me the quote: "It's fashion, look it up"; totally needed to get that made into a sign to have with me!

Currently loving: this mens-wear inspired uniform

"I have an irrational fear of wasting a good outfit on an insignificant day"

- unknown
I have almost a form of fashion ADD where I can be very inconsistent in what I wear from day-to-day. One day
I'll be wearing something super girly and on trend, then grungy and dark. But recently I've unknowingly adopted
a uniform of sorts; a menswear inspired button up, jeans and flats combo.

hunger games necklace - Amazon
shirt - vintage/thrifted
jeans - G market
shoes - clarks

I don't know how long it will last, but I've been quite enjoying rotating my growing collection of collared shirts with
my selection of skinny jeans and flats. It's made picking an outfits on rushed tired mornings easy and
it's super comfortable for running between campuses as the semester heads into exam time!

What would your go-to 'uniform' be at the moment?

Paperclips and Plaid

“Plaid shirts and striped pants rarely make a positive fashion statement.”

-the Paperclip helper from Microsoft Word Documents

So I was searching for the perfect plaid quote to go with this post when I came across the above. Who new the paper clip helper from Word could be so knowledgeable, that one has some great advice. That nifty little guy ;)

I wanted to experiment with this new plaid shirt and after some good old Tumblr research, I decided to try it tied round my waist. Casual and easy right? Wrong! I actually had to get Tara to lend me a hand and we spent a good 10 minutes adjusting and re-tying the shirt to sit in the perfectly sloppy position. I have a new appreciation for every girl I have seen working this trend, it's harder than you think. (or is it just me having these problems hehehe?)

new in: Glassons EDT boutique wrap dress - orange is the new black

"Look for the woman in the dress. If there is no woman, there is no dress."
- Coco Chanel

I follow a few NZ fashion media people on twitter and last week I started hearing about the new limited edition
collection from glassons coming out. I started to get increasingly more excited the more I saw of it, so come
Thursday morning I luckily had a morning lecture (meaning I was actually awake) and jumped on their website
to look at buying something from it. I had seen this fire engine orange wrap dress in the media photos and loved
it but eventually decided to get it since it was the item I thought was most eyecatching and best for my shape. I
really liked the little details like the semi-transparent sleeves and the wrap fastening detail. It arrived super fast (as
in next day super fast) and though I haven't had something to wear it to yet, I wanted to style/share it because
I couldn't leave it hidden for long.

lol I was trying to pat the cat with my shoes to make her go away, she followed us around all afternoon, she
even made it into the video haha!
wrap dress - glassons (from their new limited edition EDT collection)
bag - mighty purse from Hedgerow
shoes - number one shoes

In my haste to take these photos I forgot two things. 1. I needed to iron this dress (since I ordered it online it didn't come with all its folds steamed out). and 2.This dress requires a slip underneath it. As you might be able to spot from some of the photos, it has large splits up the sides and an unsecured flap (since its a wrap dress). And though these details are gorgeous, they reveal a little too much skin when one is slipless and confronted by wind. I may not have worn it out yet, but I have learnt some important weather/undergarment considerations for when I do!

I also had the opportunity from nzgirl to try out this mighty purse. I did a post about it on their website (here), and also made a video about how it works because I thought it might be easier (and more fun) to explain that way. So if you're interested I've included that below :)

What to wear to a concert...

"Live life for the moment because everything else is uncertain"
- Louis Tomlinson

So the other night we risked future hearing problems to attend the concert of five gorgeous British boys with (actually) great voices. We had a great time and thought it would make a good post about what to wear to a concert. Now for those of us that can't afford to go to concerts willy nilly, it's going to be a band/artist you really like and will want to enjoy the experience rather than being annoyed by your outfit choices (at least that's how we feel). So before the concert we discussed what we were going to wear not only fashion wise but also items that were suitable for a night of singing, dancing and general excitement.

#1. cool comfy tops
both of us went for t-shirts as it can get pretty hot dancing along and with so many people around. You want to keep
cool and not have to worry about your top falling down, so a t shirt is a great option

#2. something warm for after
if you're going to an evening concert you are going to want something warm to put on when you come out (and
maybe on your way there). Ellen had a good idea to tie her jumper around her middle so it added a cool accessory
while not in use, while I (Tara) went for a leather jacket, warmth and a bit of an a compensatory cool factor.

#3. shorts
Ellen and I are both fans of wearing shorts to concerts. On one hand they keep you cool in the heat, and on the
other they are great if you do plan on bustin' a move and don't want to flash anyone.

#4. flat shoes
Finally we finished off the outfits with flat shoes. Since we were walking down to vector arena from work we
wanted to have shoes that were practical. Also, even though the concert had allocated seating, we knew everyone
(except maybe the parents) would be standing and didn't want to be 'those girls' that are tottering around with
sore feet.

Ellen: | Tara:
bisous tshirt - topshop | top c/o lookbookstore
shorts - general issue | shorts - made by me
jellies - factorie | shoes - novo shoes
jumper - cotton on | leather jacket - just jeans
                                                 | arrow necklace, bag - glassons

We had a really fun time on Sunday, our ears are still almost ringing from all the screaming. We also happily discovered our seats (though 1 row from the back) were actually pretty good for cheap seats as they were high but kinda close to the stage; score!

There aren't any set rules for what to wear to a concert; you can wear whatever you'd like (and it would also dependon who you were going to see!) But we thought having some ideas would always be useful, especially if you are feeling lost like we were the night before! Hopefully this post helps!

PS. Tara is sorry for her social media feed spamming around the time of the concert (if you follow her haha) it was a long awaited event!
