STILL unfinished: Polka Dot Skort

"The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas"
- Dr Linus Pauling

I do quite a bit of sewing; enough that people always ask if I've made things I'm wearing. There are quite a few things I have made that have become staple, well-loved items in my wardrobe. However that is not always the case. There have also been many failures that never stay for long due to poor execution, lack of planning, or just bad luck. Then there are the pieces like this skirt which are a last minute sprint to the finish and not always completely finished. I would categorize this skirt as a success since I made up the pattern and worn it many times (including to the birthday on the evening I made it). Success despite the secret safety pins still holding some pieces together. My approach to sewing includes trying lots of ideas because one is sure to be a good one eventually.

One thing that is just about to be finished is 2013, which seems insane!! Hope everyone has a fantastic New Years Eve to celebrate the year that been and what's yet to come in 2014!

Summer Culottes

"Fashion changes but style endures"
- Coco Chanel

While those in the Northern Hemisphere battle snow and storms, we down south are enjoying all the
perks of a summer Christmas. A classic kiwi Christmas generally involves the outdoors and some kind of
barbeque. The moment I found these hot pink culottes in a local thrift shop, I knew they were the ideal
BBQ attire. A pair of culottes has the ability to be either casual or formal and above all the are ever so
functional. I styled them with a simple white tank, jellies and sunnies to keep with that 'summer feel'.

Christmas!

“One can never have enough socks," said Dumbledore. "Another Christmas has come and gone
and I didn't get a single pair. People will insist on giving me books.”

― J.K. RowlingHarry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Another Christmas time has arrived and zoomed past leaving but a trail of ripped wrapping paper and glitter. It's a time of year we always enjoy based on the festivity, food and family/friends that are always lovely. Once again this year we ate too much delicious food, and had nice times with family and friends. We thought we'd leave you with a few phone snaps of moments from the past few weeks :)

1. New candy cane lights to add to the garden this year
2. A herd of Christmas dinosaurs Tara made for her friends
3. Collection and decoration of the tree
4. Peppermint mocha in a festive mug
5. Spot the gremlin hiding within the decorations ;P
6. Delicious strawberry mouse sponge dessert
7. Ice cream and a chocolate cherry mouse!
8. Cousins, teeth and tree
9. Franklin Rd wildlife
10. Some stocking treats from Christmas morning ^.^
11. A cute present from some lovely ladies ;)
12. More dessert omnom

We also got some socks in our stockings (along with many other fantastic presents #luckygirls) so are, like Dumbledore would be, going to sleep happiness (and food) filled.

Hope you all have/had a great day :)
Merry Christmas!!

New things: Experiments and Rush Decisions...

"A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new."

- Albert Einstein

Sometimes an outfit will come together easily and it will all just work, but I'm not sure this is one of those.
Firstly I refused to let the fact my candy cane nails clashed with my new top stop me from wearing it. Then I
tried a different attachment for my hair curler for the first time and had a poodle/cocker spaniel hair vibe.
Looking at these photos a couple of days later though it doesn't look too bad at all. Sometimes you get so
caught up in the details its easy to lose the big picture.

Crazy 'Cowlicks'

"A cowlick is a section of hair that stands straight up or lies at an angle at odds..."
- Web definitions

A 'cowlick' is a crazy bit of hair that is totally untameable. It's called a cow lick pretty much because it looks
like a cow has come along and licked up your face and hair causing it to stick out at odd angles. Weird I
know, but I happen to have three! Two at the front of my head that last week left my hairdresser very
confused. My cowlicks make it quite tricky to get a straight parting and my hair sits where it wants to sit, no
matter how much you tackle it with a comb. Oh and my third cowlick sits at the back of my head just for a
little fun surprise. So even though these photos were taken right after I left the hairdresser, I had  to laugh at
how crazy messy it had gotten! Not even a professional can get my cowlicks to sit flat!

This is my go-to dress for summer, an absolute favourite of mine. I thrifted it about two years ago and although
its a few sizes to big, I love the loose fit and light weight fabric. Oh and the way it twirls! Im such a sucker
for any dress I can spin in hehehe.

Candy cane nails and a new watch

“You will never find time for anything. If you want time, you must make it.”
― Charles Buxton
As some of you may know/have noticed, I love interesting watches. There's my signature lego watch which I had to find again after being known as the "lego watch girl" for many years (x). Theres a cat one (x), a clear one (x), and even my simple watch (x) I consider interesting since it belonged to my grandfather! So when I had a look at the watches from Born Pretty I got pretty excited. They have a great range of interesting women's watches, and eventually I settled on a cool map faced one. As much as I love white leather it is normally something I steer away from due to the dirty factor. But at such an affordable price I figured this was great since I can easily get a replacement (or try a new style).

nails - OPI liquid sand in 'Solitaire', and Butter London in 'Chancer'

Today I also decided to get festive when doing my nails and take inspiration from one of my favourite Christmas things; the candy cane. I started with a red nail polish for the base (I used ‘Chancer‘ by Butter London) and waited for it to dry well. Next I cut up little strips of sellotape and placed them over the nails at an angle where I wanted the red strips to be (making sure they a stuck down well with no bubbles). Then I painted the white polish over
the top (I used ‘Solitaire’ by OPI). After waiting for this to dry (if it hasn’t dried properly it can smudge everywhere!) you then peel off the tapeA clean up with a polish remover soaked cotton bud is then required (I find it impossible to keep nail polish just on the nail) and you’re done! I think this would look equally as cool with a gold and white or green and red; basically what ever festive colours you have! Pretty simple but a very cool effect! I did them while watching Captain America again so maybe I was slightly influenced by that too haha.

I really love the watch, and I've already had people complimenting me on it which is always a good sign I'm not the only one. I was also impressed with the quality which turned out to really great, especially considering this one is only $5.99 (USD)! If you need (or want) a new watch you're sure to find one you like on Born PrettyThey were even nice enough to offer a 10% discount for our readers if you use the coupon code TARAMC10 :)

New Shoes: Shop Styled and Conquering

"Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world."
- Marilyn Monroe

A couple of weeks back we went to a shoe sale our Mum always goes to and I picked out this pair of metallic
detail wedges. I needed another pair of summer sandals for uni next year and these were super comfortable
soft leather so there was no questioning this purcahse. I've already instagrammed about them (x), but you couldn't
really see the whole shoe. Luckily they have been the shoe of choice whenever I've gone out recently so we found
an opportunity to take some photos the other day while in Parnell.

There's always something about the perfect pair of shoes that makes you walk differently; like you could conquer
the world, and these are my favourite conquering shoes to strut in atm haha! They are especially great for
adding a bit of interest to a simple outfit like this one.

Height is Best

"The higher the better. It's more about an attitude. High heels empower women in a way."
- Christian Louboutin

It's rather unusual how drawn Tara and I are to sky-high heels considering how tall we already are. The higher they
are, the better they are I always say. These photos were taken just before I headed off to my school graduation
dinner. The shoes definitely added another level to the outfit (Tehe see what I did there?). I ended up being the
tallest in the room for the night, such an accomplishment. The towering wedges are from Tara's collection but
we were both convinced they were the perfect thing to complete the whole look. Ahhh, don't you just love it
when an outfit comes together? ;)

Dress : Blak
Shoes : Number One
Bag c/o GiGi New York
Nails : OPI Liquid Sand
Make Up : MAC Holiday Collection; Divine Nights
Tara did my eye makeup using our new MAC Divine Nights palette. It turned out gorgeous (if we do say so
ourselves), so we had to include a close up snap to show it off. I also had my hair cut, treated and blown
out as a little treat for my last High School hurrah.

So now I have officially finished high school! I am so crazy excited to finish this stage of my life and move on
to University. I'll just to take a moment to brag and casually mention here that I awarded the senior English Cup
and runner up Dux, woohoo!!
