Candor style extras

“Art is the lie that enables us to realize the truth.”
― Pablo Picasso

In our last post we shared the final three outfits inspired by the book Divergent (Pt I & II here). But we loved the Candor photos too much (and you guys seemed to like them too) so we wanted to share all of them!
It's a pretty simple outfit colour wise but I really liked the details Ellen included like tucking in one side of the shirt to mirror the bottom of the skort. Plus how stunning does she look!?

shirt - thrifted
skort c/o boohoo
shoes - windsor smith
cuffs - Diva

We had a lot of fun creating looks inspired by the Divergent book/movie so we hope you liked them too!
There are quite a few awesome (visually and plot wise) looking movies coming out this year so we might do some more "inspired by" posts if you would like!

Just to be confusing the photos are of Ellen but I wrote this post, so I will sign it off :)

Divgergent Inspired Fashion Pt II: Amity, Candor and Erudite

“Becoming fearless isn’t the point. That’s impossible. It’s learning how to control your fear, and how to become free from it”
- Veronica Roth, Divergent

Divergent is out in cinemas now and in a nod to the brilliant book that started it all, we have been breaking down the looks for each of the five diverse factions (you can see our looks for Dauntless and Abnegation here).
We saw the Divergent movie at Easter weekend and thought it was awesome! We especially loved how loyal they were to the book, it’s one of few successful book to movie out there! Even if you’ve seen the movie the book is still worth reading; you’ll get the dish behind those long looks between Four and Tris, and learn more about her friends Will and Christina.
Anyway this post is about the fashion! The looks we’ve put together are more specific to the books (so a little different to the movie), but they were fun to create so we hope you enjoy them :).

Amity is the faction that values peacefulness, kindness, forgiveness, and trust. They are the ones that grow most of the food for the factions on farms outside the city perimeter, so this would be reflected in the clothing they wear. Their colours in the book are red and yellow to symbolize happiness and freedom.
Ellen is wearing a yellow skirt, plaid shirt and brown lace up boots. This outfit is perfect for working in the fields, but it’s also bright and happy.  We decided to stick to red and yellow as described in the book rather than introducing browns and greens like they did in the movie.
Candor is the faction that value honesty and truth very highly. The wear only black and white as this is how they see truth to be.
Ellen is wearing a crisp white button up, a black skort and leather sandals (Because pleather is just lying!). We thought this represented the Candor personality with graphic sharp corners.
Erudite is the faction that values knowledge, curiosity and intelligence. Members must wear at least one item of blue clothing as it supposed to be “a calming colour that helps stimulate the brain”. They also (in the books) tend to wear thick rimmed glasses to make them seem smarter.
Tara is wearing a royal blue dress,  blazer, glasses and metallic stilettos.  Looking smart and powerful is key for pulling off Erudite style.

We hope you enjoyed our Divergent inspired outfits!

Newspaper Nails 'How to' video

"If you don't read the newspaper, you're uninformed. If you read the newspaper, you're misinformed"
- Mark Twain

We have our latest youtube video to share with you guys today (I know, try and contain that excitement). This week we decided to do something fun with our nails. Nail art can be tricky and often we find ourselves leaving it to the 'professionals' ,resulting in a significant money drain. But we've got you sorted with these awesome newspaper nails. They are quick and easy and will get the attention of all your friends. Check out our video below to see how you can get either Tara's matte look, or Ellen's shiny look.

We hope you enjoyed this video, don't forget to subscribe to our channel here so you never miss a video! Also, give this DIY a thumbs up so we know to do more.

The Penny Boarding Continues

"Cute accessories always help bring out an outfit and pull it all together."
- Ciara

With winter looming I decided I better squeeze in some last few penny board adventures. Tara and I got our penny boards just before the beginning of last summer and I must say, they are worth every penny (hehehe see what I did there guys?). Not only has my penny gotten me out exercising, it makes the perfect accessory to any outfit. Yes I just referred to a skateboard as an accessory, I am a girl, deal with it.

Top : General Issue
Shorts + necklace : Glassons
Shoes : Chuck Taylor
Glasses c/o chicnova.com

It's hard to believe these photos were taken in between rain showers. Auckland, you have the weirdest weather patterns. But I will take any moment of sunshine I can get, no matter how brief. Winter is coming...

Style to survive long periods in air-condition lectures...

"Style is everything. It helps you get up in the morning. It helps you get down the stairs. It's a way of life. " - Diana Vreeland

Figuring out what to wear each day to uni gets complicated more by the fact that sometimes the class rooms have particularly cold air conditioning compared to the temperatures outside. This outfit was for a day I had six hours of consecutive lectures in particularly chilly class room, so comfort and adaptability to temperatures was paramount. My basic formula for days like this is cotton pants/leggings (comfort + warmth), short sleeved shirt (cool for outside), jacket/cardigan (warmth),  and bag (to carry all sorts of academic stuff, but more importantly food).

tote bag - Kikki K
pants - Cotton On
Jacket c/o ChoiesTkikkiy
shoes - baby blue converse
watch - May28th

That day at uni went surprisingly fast, and wasn't at all like I was dreading. Our course coordinator even went to the cafe and bought us all coffee! One of the perks of being part of a small course I guess!

Hope everyone is enjoying the Easter holidays and making the most of the long weekend! I've been productive in bloggy things, but tomorrow will have to have an assignment focus!

18 year old handbag queen

"Those unforgettable moments"
- Pandora

I was 12 when I first discovered pandora bracelets in a local jewellery store. I always loved the idea of a bracelet full of memories, and since a young age always longed for a charm bracelet like my mothers. But there was something I found even more beautiful and enchanting about  Pandora bracelets. They held the perfect combination of classic elegance, modern taste and simple everyday design. My mum told me I had to wait till my 18th birthday to have one, which at the age of 12 seemed forever away. And yet here I am, 18 already!! And as promised, with my perfect pandora bracelet. I was spoilt rotten by all my family and feel so incredibly lucky. My Auntie and Uncle gave me the silver bracelet and my Mum, Dad and sister picked out my very first bead for me.

Ever since I was a little girl my family has called me the 'Handbag Queen'. Even as a toddler I always felt the need accessorise every outfit with a bag (such a wise young thing).  So it was only fitting that my first bead resembled a mini pandora handbag. Pandora jewellery is beautifully made and I have been wearing this gorgeous thing everyday since my birthday!

Divergent inspired fashion pt 1: Abnegation & Dauntless

"We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another"
- Veronica Roth, Divergent

Divergent  has officially hit New Zealand cinemas! We were feeling inspired and decided to put together two looks inspired by the movies. For those of you who haven't read the book or yet to have seen the movie, check out our previous post for a little review. The books follow a young girl named Tris through post apocalyptic Chicago where the society has been divided into five factions. Each faction has distinct role and personality.

We have yet to see the movie, but decided to create these two outfits to inspired by what we read in the book about each faction. The first is Abnegation, the faction that values selflessness and service others. This is the faction that Tris is born in, and Ellen wears a simple dress and blouse in the faction's colour grey. Abnegation wear their hair pulled back and loose clothing so not to draw attention to themselves.  Tara wears an outfit inspired by the Dauntless faction. Dauntless are known to be brave and almost fearless. Their faction colour is black and they are known for their tattoos and piercings. Leather seemed perfect for representation of a dauntless character.

How to get the Divergent look!

Ellen wears:
  • A blouse that you can button up to the collar. Get the look
  • A pinafore style dress to wear over top your shirt.
  • Frilly ankle socks paired with black lace up shoes. Get the look.
Tara Wears:

Stay tuned for more outfits inspired by the Divergent book and let us know if you guys see the movie!
