The Skinny Jeans story

"I'm like every other woman: a closet full of clothes, but nothing to wear: So I wear jeans."
- Cameron Diaz

A good pair of skinny jeans are still very much a wardrobe staple, even after being around for so many years. For the past couple of years I've needed a new pair that actually fitted but never managed to find the time nor the budget to get a decent pair. Ellen needed the perfect modelesque pair for a photo-shoot and surprisingly found a good selection at the Esprit at dressmart. So I went down there one afternoon as part of an extended study break which also included having an awesome lunch at Orleans for a friends birthday (omg such good food and icea tea!! *drools at memory*). Sophie from nanawintour wrote about Orleans and other great Auckland food places in her 'auckland eats' post today if you're interested.

button up shirt - Garage (from The Warehouse)
leather jacket - Just Jeans
polka dot beanie - Karen Walker
sovereign case - antique
suede boots - Play Motives
jeans - Esprit

On that trip I had massive jean shopping success (even though their sizes were confusing with waist and leg measurements) and bought two pairs for $60 #bargain!
I've been wearing them a lot lately. This particular outfit was one I wore to an exam and ended up overheating in the room but being cold in transit (Isn't that always the way with lecture theatres in winter?).

Video: Wardrobe Makeover and Mini Closet Tour

"I like my money where I can see it - hanging in my closet."
- Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City

Part of loving fashion is owning (probably too many) clothes and needing somewhere to put them. Having a functional and pretty wardrobe is not something all houses have, so Ellen decided earlier this year that it was time to renovate hers and bring it towards her Carrie Bradshaw like dreams. Thanks to the combined efforts a family of kiwi DIYers (mainly Dad and Mum, thanks guys!) this is the result. Not only can she now reach everything in it (no more black hole zone in the middle of the sliding doors!) it looks great and nothings getting squashed anymore. We made a little video about some of the process and it might give you a few ideas if your wardrobe is in need over a makeover!

Hope you enjoy the video, thanks to everyone that has subscribed to our channel! We've nearly reached 250 subscribers, which may seem small to some, but it's a real milestone for us woo!

The Last Exam

"A true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination"
- Albert Einstein

This post celebrates the official end to my first semester of university, woohoo! I made it through my last exam yesterday (fingers crossed it went well). I am so excited to have a little break and get back into some more blogging. Unfortunately, we're not all free from uni just yet. Tara has one exam left and is currently hiding in her room studying away, so let's all wish her good luck!
This does mean however my spell-check buddy is currently unavailable ;)

Jeans: Esprit
Floral blazer c/o Style Keepers
Bucket bag c/o Yes Style
Pink suede wedges : Rubi Shoes

We tried to change up our outfit shooting location for this post. We were cut a little short for time as I had to run off to a meeting and so we didn't manage to get the lighting right on point. The sun can be rather inconvenient at times (fashion blogger pains). What do you guys think of these shots? Comment down below, we would love to hear!

New Sewing: Leopard Print and Procrastination Are My Weaknesses

"My weakness is wearing too much leopard print."
- Jackie Collins

So on Sunday I was hit with the sudden urge to sew something. Partially because I couldn't afford a jumper I wanted, and partially because I didn't want to study for exams. So I made this leopard print jumper thing out of some fabric my Aunt had given me last year to fulfill both my roll-neck jumper and procrastination needs.

 top - made by me
wet look leggings - glassons
cut out boots -
nails - Rimmel Salon Pro Kate Moss in 'Hip Hop'
lips - Rimmel Kate Moss in '107'
flower ring - Karen Walker
necklace - antique sovereign case

It came together pretty well and was just a simple long-sleeve shirt pattern made looser with a tube attached to the neck (I didn't even finish the edges; sorry Mum!). But for now I must forget about sewing, and anything non-uni, for only a few more days until exams are over!!

Purple pants and blazers

"When in doubt, put a blazer on it"
- Ellen

Ok, yes I did just quote myself, but let me explain. Last month during a cruel early morning uni class, I had the sudden urge to wear my outrageous, comfy purple pants. I often call them my 'barney' pants, but there is something that I love about this crazy thrifted item. Of course purple pants are a bit of a challenge to style, I mean really, purple pants? I got as far as putting on a singlet but in my sleep deprived state, my mind when blank with what else to wear.  About to miss my bus, I quickly threw on a simple brown blazer.
I was pleasantly surprised that afternoon when my best friend told me how much she loved my outfit. After I told her about my morning struggle we had a few laughs and finally said to her "Well, when in doubt, put a blazer on it". After a long day of uni I thought it was a great joke and my friend was just like "omg, you should write a post on that!". And so here we are.

Pants : Thrifted
Blazer : Gifted
Top : Glassons
Shoes c/o Boohoo

So kids, that is my great fashion wisdom for today. When in doubt put a blazer on it. A simple blazer can dress up any outfit and even make purple pants look cool.

Adventures with Ellen: Media preview

"Fashion is made to become unfashionable"
- Coco Chanel

In these tough few weeks of uni exams I’ve found myself guilty of rarely leaving the house (unless you count going to the gym or library). A few weeks ago however I got to head along to a media preview at Beat Communications. I had to laugh as I caught the bus out to their showroom in between my two uni classes of the day. It was a bit of a double life moment. One minute I’m snacking on cookies and talking about pastel for winter, the next I’m back in class learning about interpersonal communication (riveting stuff).

The media preview day showcased new collections from some of the brands I love Boohoo, Levi, Nom’d and Saben. These are a few photos I snapped around the showroom, and a little peek at my outfit of the day courtesy of the surrounding mirrors. Please note the scrumptious cookie in my hand.

This post is a little different, we don't know if it's common to blog about media preview days, but let us know if you guys liked it! I was also playing around with my new camera lens, and couldn't resist sharing the pretty photos.

The heart print shirt is back again...

"A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination."
- Nelson Mandela

I wore this outfit quite a bit last winter but I'm not sure that it ever made it to the blog. This Burberry inspired heart print shirt quickly became one of my favourite things to wear in both formal(ish) and casual outfits. I remember taking this view from above instagram last year of the same outfit and thinking it looked like something I'd stolen off Harry Styles instagram haha. Since it started to get cold here again for winter I have been loving this shirt and wearing it (possibly too much) once again.

heart print shirt c/o Choies
black jeans - Gmarket
bucket bag  c/o yeswalker
cat-eye sunglasses - onceit
boots - Glassons
watch - 28thMay
flower ring - Karen Walker
nails - 'Splash of Grenadine' by essie
lips - Rimmel Kate Moss '101'

I finished the last assignment for the semester yesterday which was an awesome feeling, but it also means exams are starting in a week eek!! Good luck for anyone else heading into the exams season, it will all be over soon enough!
