How to use Mineral Powder Foundation + Antipodes Review

In the past I have always avoided using powder foundation because one, it always makes a mess, and two it just seemed like too much effort. Earlier this month we were invited to an Antipodes blogger event where beauty expert Deborah Sampson talked through how to correctly use the Antipodes mineral foundation. To my surprise I have really enjoyed using it this past week and its safe to say I am now a mineral foundation convert. For today's post I thought I would share some tips I picked up to help solve the mystery that is applying mineral makeup.

1. Tap, Swirl & Tap
To kick things off, tap a little bit of the mineral powder into the lid and swirl your brush around in it. Tap the excess off the brush and away you go. The tap, swirl, tap process is key to minimising mess and making sure you have the right amount of product.

2. Buff don't pat
I've found mineral foundation applies best when you really buff it into your skin. I'm usually one to pat my face gently with a touch of setting powder and had always tried the same approach with mineral foundation (and failed miserably). Using my Real Technique's buffing brush has really made a difference and I am finding the overall finish a lot smoother.

3. Pair it with bb cream
The Antipodes mineral powder gives a lovely light-weight finish, but I have found my favourite way to wear it is over the top of a light coverage bb cream. This is enough to cover up all my imperfections but still leaves my skin looking natural.

4. Set with a translucent powder
Just because you are using a 'powder' foundation, does not mean you should skip your setting powder. I still like to finish off my makeup look with a dusting of my favourite Rimmel Stay Matte Powder to make the foundation last all day long and reduce shine.

5. Always moisturise beforehand
I have extremely dry skin at the moment from my acne medication and I have found the mineral foundation has a tendency to stick to my dry patches. Therefore it is key to make sure you use a good moisturiser beforehand.

A once makeup enemy has somehow snuck into my everyday makeup routine with ease, and I kind of love it! Let me know in the comments below if you have tried mineral foundation before and what you think of them.

Dressing like a Disney Princess in Real Life

When I was little, I loved to dress up as a princess. However, unlike most girls, I never really grew out of it. When Tara and I decided to venture down a local bay to take some outfit photos, I decided it was the perfect time to try out this dress I thrifted recently. Of course no princess outfit is complete without slippers and a crown. For an arguably more grown-up look, I styled my new dress with a floral headband and simple lace-up ballerina shoes. Ok scratch that, it isn't really a 'grown-up' look, and thus probably explains the odd looks I got from everyone walking by. But what can I say, that princess-obsessed girl inside me refuses to grow up.

5 Shopping Hacks for Students

If you read our blog often, it is probably fairly obvious that we love to shop. Over the years we have picked up a few tips and tricks for shopping whilst on a student budget. Today we are sharing our top five shopping hacks and the best places to shop that are kind to your wallet.

1. Buying second hand
Last month Ellen bought her first designer handbag and although it may look brand new, she actually got it second hand for a fraction of the price (check out the blog post here). Thrifting is one of our favourite ways to shop because it is a great way to save money without having to sacrifice your style. Some of our favourite local second hand stores are Finders Keepers, Paperbag Princess and Savemart.

2. Shopping the sales
When you are on a tight budget but feel a desire to shop, the sale section is your new best friend. If you are shopping online, Fashion Lane is a great place to find the best sale deals. Fashion Lane gathers sale products from over 90+ online store allowing users to find the best sales instead of searching the sale section of each individual website. Ellen tried it out the other day and bought a pair of Windsor Smith Heels for 50% off!!

3. Use Student Discounts
Lots of stores offer student discounts instore and now you can get them online too. gives you access to the best student discounts from your favourite stores. Tara's signed up and uses it to get 10% off all her asos orders.

4. Newsletter discounts
The next time you open up your favourite online store and that pesky pop up appears asking you to join their newsletter, don't ignore it! Often signing up gives you a small discount code you can use for your next purchase. Also it means you will most likely be notified of future sales and perhaps even a bonus discount code or two. Ellen used one when she ordered her ball shoes off The Iconic.

5. Sell old clothes
We all know the feeling when you look into your wardrobe and feel like you have nothing to wear. When that happens, change up your wardrobe by selling your unused clothes and buying something new. We love using local second hand stores like Finders Keepers and THe Recycled Boutique who sell your clothes on your behalf. Alternatively you can also look online to TradeMe or Designer Wardrobe.

Styling a Patterned Jumpsuit

Despite the bold print, this jumpsuit can be styled so many ways. I shared one combo in our latest Asos Eco Edit Haul, but for today's outfit I decided to dress it down a little with a denim jacket and sneakers. Versatile fashion pieces are what I love to buy, the more ways I can wear something the better. That's part of what attracted me to this jumpsuit, I could see myself wearing it somewhere dressy as well as on casual days. I can't wait to try out more layering with it in cooler months, but I'll probably stick to pattern free neutral pieces to keep focus on the awesome monochrome print.

Jumpsuit - Asos Africa + Ring - Asos Reclaimed Vintage (see our haul for more information about the Asos Eco Edit) // Denim jacket  - The Warehouse // Rings - Pandora & Karen Walker // Shoes c/o Ecco // Sunglasses - Molly N // Nails - Sephora formula X in 'Extraordinary' // Necklace  from our blog shop (here)

5 Tips for Decorating your 'Pinterest' Worthy Home

Earlier this week we attended the launch of the new season autumn/winter homeware range from The Warehouse. It was one of the coolest events we've been to in a while and the Pinterest vibes were so strong. We took what felt like a million photos of every pretty thing in sight (which was a lot), so we decided to share the photos alongside our top five tips for creating a Pinterest worthy pad.

1. Find the perfect duvet
When it comes to the bedroom, I think the most important thing is the bed. It really dominates the room so it is important to have the right duvet cover. If you are completely redecorating this is also a great way to start with a colour palette and patterns, then you can build your room from there.

2. Marble Accessories
One huge homeware trend this season is marble. Marble lights, marble plates, marble placemats, marble pillows and just MARBLE EVERYTHING. It is the new 'it' material. Trust us. Go buy something marble stat, you will have no regrets.

3. Geometric Vibes
Who knew a triangle could bring so much style to a room? Geometric shapes are everywhere on Pinterest at the moment, even on the furniture. Whether you go for something large like a side table, or a more subtle tabletop accessory, this is a great to 'Pinterest up' a room.

4. Embrace Neutrals - The Scandinavian Way
Scandinavian style has really taken off and my Pinterest is always flooded with pictures of the perfect minimalist neutral homes. Don't make the mistake of thinking a neutral home is boring though! Play around with pattern and texture and mix in some metal, wood and faux animal fur. In my opinion these living rooms are anything but boring.

5. Rose Gold Everything
My final tip for this post is just buy everything in rose gold. Everything. I am unsure how long this trend will last, but I am obsessed with it. Much like the marble trend, there is a endless list of items you can buy in rose gold. In fact, you can even combine your rose gold with your marble for the ultimate Pinterest look. You can also combine it with the geometric trend; see this gorgeous terrarium below!

That's it for our Pinterest decor tips. I wonder how many times I wrote 'Pinterest in this post? Probably too many. If you want some more Pinterest love on a budget, check out this DIY decor video we did awhile ago here. Also leave us a comment below if you liked this style of post and want to see more like it!

What I wore to my Magazine Internship

As they say in The Devil Wears Prada, "a million girls would kill for this job". That's definitely how I felt when I got my first magazine internship this summer. It's hard to put into words and explain how much I love being an intern, because to outsiders fetching coffee and ironing clothes doesn't sound like much. To me, however, it is the most exciting thing I have ever been apart of. I feel like I've been let into this secret unseen world of magazines that I had previously only read about in books.

I could gush about my internship all day long, but for today's post I thought I would share one of my intern outfits from last week. I always try to look professional when going to my internship, but I also like to have fun with styling.
