How to Look Cool in Winter

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but winter is coming. It's not all bad though, because with a change in season comes a fashion refresh. I'm personally a big fan of winter, not only because it means the ski season is here, but also because I love to layer clothes. It can however be a challenge to look cool in winter when you are bundled up in jumpers and coats, so in this post I'm sharing my top tips for looking stylish in winter.

1. Oversized knits
There is nothing cosier than a chunky oversized knit. It's a very versatile piece to have in your wardrobe that can be dressed up or down. Style tip: wear it with skinny jeans or tight leggings to balance out the oversized shape.

2. Statement Jacket
A bad outfit can be transformed with one jacket. If you are only wanting to buy one new thing this winter, treat yourself with a nice jacket. I find outerwear is the first thing you see and leaves a lasting impression - so make it a good one!

3. Try Tights
Don't limit yourself to jeans this winter, try wearing tights to mix up your outfits. Whether you're wearing a skirt, dress, or an oversized knit, tights will keep you warm and stylish.

4. Colourful Accessories
My winter wardrobe always tends to be very monochromatic. A good way to mix things up is to add a pop of colour with a bright accessory.

5. Heeled Ankle Booties
To me there is nothing classier than a pair of heeled black ankle booties. They instantly transform an outfit by giving it a more polished and professional look. I was particularly drawn to this pair because of the interesting cut-outs and chic pointed toe.

Diane Von Furstenberg Heels - Mini TradeMe Haul

They may be ridiculously high and hard to walk in, but they sure are beautiful. Last week Tara and I were feeling a little bit spendy when we stumbled across these two pairs of Diane Von Furstenberg heels on TradeMe. These bad boys retail somewhere between $350-$400 full price, so we could not believe our eyes when we saw they we listed for only $75. To make it even better, both pairs were brand new, never worn, and still in their original boxes and dust bags. Mind. Blown.

I've been a fan of DVF for a long time, and when I read her book a few months ago I fell even more in love with her and her brand. These shoes are seriously like a work of art. The quality is on a whole new level than any other shoe I've owned. I could be slightly skewed by the enchanting DVF logo and packaging, but they are definitely something special. The only thing wrong with them is that i'm left wanting to buy another pair. Not necessarily the worst thing in the world, but definitely not great for my bank balance...

New In: Komono sunglasses

I debuted these new sunglasses on Instagram the other day as my first purchase from Anomie (A-no-mee), store of one of my favourite youtubers ChelseaWears. I say first as I have been eyeing up a great many things in her store for a long time. With my second paycheck after starting full-time work, I finally decided to push the 'confirm order' button. Funnily enough the next day I sat on my favourite pair of sunglasses and broke them *sad face*. So it was good timing that this pair had started their journey from San Francisco to me.

Denim Jacket - The Warehouse // Dress - boohoo // Backpack + Dinosaur socks (yes they had dinosaurs on them and they made me smile haha) - Topshop // Sunglasses - Komono from Anomie //  Boots c/o The Warehouse // Necklace - Shop Style Conquer Store // Headphones - Frends // Lips - MAC x Beth Ditto in 'Dear Diary'

5 Concealers Tried & Tested - Maybelline, Collection & LA Girl

Over the past year or so I've tried quite a few different concealers which I've come to love for different reasons. So today I thought I would share my little concealer collection and the strengths/weaknesses of each one.

1. Maybelline Anti-Age Eraser Eye concealer

When I first tried this concealer I didn't like it. I was so used to a much heaver coverage thick concealer that the light fluid consistency of this one was foreign. After trying it for a little while I decided I loved it. For the lightness of it this concealer has pretty decent coverage. It can cover blemish scars and most of my under-eye circles (just enough peeks through that I still look human haha). The applicator is a bit strange and I still haven't figured out how many twists to get enough product out, but this is a solid favourite for me.

2. Maybelline Super-Stay 24hour concealer

This concealer is a recent addition to the collection after watching a video on the Pixiwoo channel where Nic talked about concealers. This one was meant to be long lasting, high coverage, but not too dry and it certainly lives up to Nic's high praise. This concealer isn't as dry feeling as the collection one (see below) and I think I would repurchase this one over it when it's run out.

3. Maybelline Fit Me concealer

I had a little love affair with this concealer just over a year ago, repurchasing three tubes of it before moving onto other things. It's quite a wet formula incomparion with the 24hour and Lasting Perfection concealers so not as long lasting. I also find the coverage a little lower which I used to find frustrating when trying to cover blemishes and scarring. It is a good little concealer if you want a lower coverage natural look.

4. LA Girl Pro Conceal

When I bought Ellen one of these for her Beauty Advent Calendar last Christmas they only had packs of three on BeautyJoint, so naturally I also bought one for myself. I'd seen Shannon from Shaaanxo talking highly of this so I wanted to give it a try. Like the Maybelling Fit Me concealer it is lower coverage and creamier than some of the long lasting formulas. I find it doesn't quite conceal my scarring or under eye circles, but I LOVE using it for cleaning up my eyebrows. Sometimes the edges of my eyebrows go a bit mad when I use dip brow and the brush applicator on this concealer is perfect for getting a sharp edge.

5. Collection Lasting Perfection concealer

If you've watched a beauty youtuber do their makeup chances are you've seen them use this concealer. It's dry, high coverage and long lasting. Ellen finds it a little too dry, but I really like it as I have oily-combination skin and like a more matte look to my makeup. These are great value and available at supermarkets in NZ so pretty easy to get which is awesome to repurchasing. I think the Maybelline 24-hour has recently pushed this concealer off top spot for me, but it's early days so I might return to this reliable star.

Do you have any concealers you really like and recommend I try? I've heard great things about the Nars Creamy concealer but never tried it, maybe that should be next on the list!

How to Dress for Dinner Out - What I Wore

I am definitely one to always overdress, and I jump at any chance to throw on a good pair of heels and a nice dress. I did exactly that when I went out for dinner with some friends the other week. I pulled together this outfit in a rush and actually really loved how it came together. When I'm going out for dinner I always like to go for a simple tidy dress and a crazy pair of shoes. Since you're sitting down eating food 90% of the time, it's a good opportunity to whip out those heels that are tricky to walk in. To finish off the look I added my favourite coat and a small ladylike clutch that was just big enough for everything I needed.

5 Tips for Dressing up Culottes

Culottes or wide leg pants are a trend that seems to be sticking around. I love their comfortable baggyness and relaxed vibe, but sometimes I find the shape easily takes a turn for casual. Today I thought I'd share a couple of strategies I have to 'formal up' the look when styling culottes.

1. Tuck
Tucking your top into your culottes cinches the look in at the waist and helps balance out the bagginess of the pants.

2. Think About the Top
A top that shows a little more skin or is on the tighter side can be good in this situation to again balance out the baggy bottom half. Something like a strappy singlet or a knit that is fitted in the arms can be good depending what the weather is like.

3. Bag lady
A nice bag is an easy way to top off an outfit. Something on the smaller side adds some classiness to the look, saying more of "I'm going out" than "I'm running some errands".

4. Heels
Heels are a sure-fire way to excise casual from the equation, and I think simple black strappy heels are even better. Heels also work well with cropped pants as they tend to give the illusion of shortening you, so a bit of a heel can help cancel out this effect.

5. Red Lipstick
Want to look more glamorous? Add a red lip. Done.

Do you have a pair of culottes? How do you like to style them?
